Kuching, Serawak
One week after I came back home from Kupang, East Nusatenggara province, I had been offered by my boss to fly to Kuching for attending the Documentary Film Festival in Malaysia. Actually my condition had not really fit, due to when I was in Kupang I got a cough and flu fever.
Because during that time mostly of my colleagues in the office had found themselves with the deadline schedule of their work, this is the reason why I was the properly person who should go to Kuching. The day three in Kuching I was really drop and felt faint in all of my body. When I was walking alone back to my lodge from the festival venue, I felt I can't do anything I would.
Three days in Kuching was very impressive for my self. This is the new experience I found it. To arrive and back from Kuching, because there's no direct flight to go to Jakarta, I must stop over in Kuala Lumpur for 3 hours. Another story that I have to tell is when I was going home to Bogor (my home town) at 23rd of September, I must directly go to the hospital and stay my days there. This is my first time experience for staying at the hospital and also gets the intravenous. Welcome… finally I should enjoy the facility of the hospital.
Freedom Film Fest 2008, Kuching
Freedom Film Fest is the annual event which have aimed to screen the series of documentary films from the worldwide, including countries like Indonesia, the Philippines, America, Korea and of course Malaysia as the host. This fourth FFF on this year, have a flag for bringing the human right issue.
FFF had been arranged by Komas (name of Malaysia NGO) are also opened to facilitate the film competition for the youth filmmaker. Komas conducted the selection for the appropriate stories which related with their annual theme. Three of the winners deserves the award of RM 5,000 (USD 1,400) as well as the free editing facility for their films.
In addition of the three winning film presentation, FFF had screened the other film from various countries, including Voices from the Forest India, produced by Gekko Studio/Dusty Foot Production for NTFP-EP and also The Indigenous Peoples of Knasaimos, produced by Gekko Studio/Handcrafted Films.
Screening had been taken place at Old Court House, started from 19-21 of September 2008 and was officially opened by Dominic Ng, the representative of Government, on his speech he mentioned " I'm really great with this opportunity, in particularly because there will be a film presentation which related with the issue of democratization in Sarawak through exposing the land right struggle movement of the indigenous from the oil palm threat".
On the day-two, the festival presented the session of documentary film on the Native Land Right and Conservation. Three films: Voices from the Forest India, The Indigenous People of Knasaimos and What Rain Forest (produced by Ketapang Pictures) were on the screen. Crowded of people had been there, approximately 100 audiences were attended. Perhaps, because this is the first documentary film festival in this state, many of Sarawakian came with very enthusiastic feeling for watching it.
After the screening end, it's been followed with the QA session. Not many commentary or questions for Voices and Knasaimos Film, because both of those films are telling the story of seeking the solution to keep the forest management on place. It's very different with What Rain Forest. This film had exposed the stories of the indigenous land in Sarawak, which claimed by the government as well as the oil palm companies, one of the situation which rampant in all over of Sarawak. Iban and other of indigenous communities still struggle to reseize their ancestor land that already claimed by the other parties.
According to the audiences response after watching it kind of series of documentaries film, look on Malaysia and other countries, they demand that this festival should be continued by routine for the years coming. Many of documentaries film affected their audiences, through giving them the lesson learnt and experience from other regions. Such have ever been said by Lexy Rambadeta, one of Indonesia documentary filmmaker "Documentary is having power over time…. its last forever".
